| "The key driver for growth in the Emerging Economies of Asia will be spending on communications, particularly on WIMAX or broadband initiatives. There are also opportunities for growth in the banking sector, consumer segment and the small and midsize businesses (SMB). After the 1997 financial crisis, most of these governments have strengthened their financial systems. Consolidations within the banking sector will also bring in new opportunities for IT investments while existing banks continue to be aggressive in their expansion projects. Although consumer spending is expected to slowdown as the job market contracts, strong savings over the last few years, coupled with macroeconomic stability, will enable consumers to spend, but wisely, on key ICT products. SMBs will likely move towards more business outsourcing in order to lower their cost of operation." |

The ICT Market of the Emerging Economies in Asia (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, and India) was worth $111.5 billion in 2008 and is expected to reach nearly $174.0 billion by 2012. As a group, these countries account for the equivalent of 25% of the Western European IT market, which is also an amount slightly larger than the size of the Japanese IT market in 2008. The Emerging Economies of Asia represent 38% of the Asia Pacific ICT opportunity in 2008 and will grow to represent nearly 48% of the region's ICT spending by 2012. IDC anticipates the 2009 IT market growth to exceed 5%, which is one of the highest growth rates in the world. The rewards and opportunities in these countries are great, but investments need to be calculated and targeted at focused segments of the market. Monitoring developments in these technology markets is our job, and we are proud to say that IDC now has over 100 employees in these countries alone, making us the leading ICT market and advisory firm for Emerging Asia. IDC's broad research coverage is designed to meet the tactical needs of country sales and marketing managers as well as the more strategic requirements of regional and global executives, looking to succeed in the ICT marketplace. |
