IT Security Strategies: Weathering the Economic Storm

  Wilvin Chee Daphne Chung
Senior Research Manager, Asia/Pacific System Infrastructure and Middleware Software Research, IDC Asia/Pacific

While economic meltdown poses challenges, organization's security challenges have not gone away. Increasing sophistication of attacks, budget too small to cover necessary security purchases, lack of IT security experts within company, preventing exposure of confidential information and growing complexity of applications and standards will continue to create greater challenges for enterprise’s security management.

Security investments will become ever more important also as businesses need to hedge themselves from further damage caused by security attacks. And during a market downturn, companies need to hold on to their competitive advantage therefore protection of intellectual property is increasingly essential.

Protect Today, Secure Your Future - Best Practices for Your Endpoints

    Avinash Lotke
Manager, Systems Engineering, Symantec
In the old days of infosecurity, it was all about cobbling some packaged and some proprietary pieces built in house, and seeing that the point solutions integrated, or more likely just interfaced, well together, and hoping that they all work and your setup is safe. Well, endpoints need more than that. By combining key technologies into a single agent and management console, you can protect your organization from tomorrow’s threats at yesterday’s costs. Learn how Symantec is revolutionizing the anti-virus market with Endpoint Protection 11.0, which helps maximize endpoint security, minimize management effort, and lower total cost of ownership.

Achieving Optimal Security in a World of Uncertainty – Re-establishing Control of Your End-points

  Sam Ghebranious Sam Ghebranious
Senior Sales Director Asia Pacific, Lumension
Data Protection is high on the agenda right now; but also understanding the risks resulting from the presence of vulnerabilities and managing those vulnerabilities is becoming equally important.  Traditional approaches used in providing security of endpoints have commonly been based on the fact that you need to know what the threat is before you can prevent it from impacting your network.  In a world of uncertainty,, the concepts of trusted computing and least privilege user access have been forgotten.  This leaves the door open to data leakage through a wide array of malware and misuse of peripheral devices.  This seminar examines the benefits of taking a positive approach to security, by defining what is allowed rather than what should be denied and simply denying the unknown by default.  It will explore how to apply this approach in a typical large environment by first quantifying what activity is taking place prior to defining and enforcing an acceptable usage policy.

Better Security with Consolidation and Virtualization

    Robin Liao
Technical Manager, Fortinet Asia South and Hong Kong
Enterprises today face myriad challenges, including that of growing security best practice while containing capital and operating costs at the same time. This causes CTOs to search for the best security solution, leading them to adopt UTM over point solution. Fortinet, the pioneer, leader and innovator of Unified Threat Management (UTM) security approach, is focusing on bringing the best solution and value to end customers. This helps to optimize cost and performance at the same time, enabling the CTO to deploy maximum security in the most efficient cost-performance approach. Fortinet’s virtualized security machines deploy VDOMs to enable great productivity and optimization when driving protection for enterprises and carriers today. Today, we will take this concept apart and piece it together to bring together the best security solution, taking your business to the next level of competency to outsmart your competition tomorrow.

Reducing the Cost and Complexity of Security – Without Compromise

  Avinash Pandey Avinash Pandey
Offering Manager, IBM Internet Security Systems, IBM ASEAN
Today's leaders face multiple challenges, including the need to innovate in extremely competitive conditions, address dynamic regulatory and compliance challenges, speed returns on investments to counter shrinking IT budgets, and secure the enterprise against a barrage of new and evolving sophisticated threats. However, unlike other business challenges, organizations often take a technology-driven approach to securing their infrastructure, when a risk-based, business-driven approach is more effective. IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) solutions secure your IT infrastructure, ensuring business continuity and enabling cost-effective processes while supporting compliance and risk management requirements.

Software: Everyone’s Unlocked Back Door

    Freddy Tan
Member of ISC2 Board of Director, Chief Security Advisor of Microsoft Asia, and Former Head of Information Security of MINDEF, Singapore

Most of us would not dream of accepting a window in a new building complex if it could be easily pushed open to provide free access to the outside world, even if it was a defining feature for the building. We would demand that it be replaced with a more secure model. If the window was then reused in another building complex, there would be outrage. If it led to a break in and a theft occurred demands may well be made for compensation. This is the scenario that is often being repeated played out in the software development world.

Security is not a stand-alone department within a software development process. Security needs to be pervasive. There is overlap with the security team, but we need the people involved in the development work need to be plugged into the security issues so the entire software lifecycle is secure. This presentation focus on the fact that information security considerations should influence the stakeholders in the software development lifecycle, including vendors and their clients from the initiation phase through to the implementation and of course eventual disposal of the data-laden, hardware and software. It also gives some recommendations on the best practice for software development.
