As senior director of business and partner marketing
for the Mobile and Embedded Devices Group at Microsoft
Corporation in Redmond, Washington, John leads
a team responsible for the global integration
of marketing, sales, services, and partner offerings
to provide flexible, end-to-end mobility solutions
for customers worldwide ranging from enterprises
to mid-caps to small businesses.
Prior to 2004, John directed Microsoft's marketing
to information technology professionals. In that
role, John was responsible for defining the company's
strategy to improve the experience of IT professionals
with Microsoft, its products, and services, and
for the development of the Windows Server System
brand to unify the marketing of Microsoft's server
products.
From 1999 through early 2002, John was general
manager of US Retail Sales, responsible for sales
of Microsoft software and hardware products through
the retail channel in the United States. Immediately
before that assignment, he was director of product
support and business operations at Microsoft Canada,
responsible for finance, facilities, information
technology, and product support in Canada. Prior
to that role, John was the national retail sales
and marketing manager at Microsoft Canada. He
has also managed channel marketing and product
marketing groups, and joined the company in 1991
as a managing consultant in Microsoft Consulting
Services.
Before joining Microsoft, John held positions
in management and information technology consulting,
serving clients in retail, manufacturing, and
other sectors. Early in his career, John co-founded
and managed a software development company whose
education and recreation titles were sold internationally.
John holds a bachelor's degree in finance and
economics from King's College at the University
of Western Ontario, in London, Canada and a master's
degree in business administration from the Schulich
School of Business at York University in Toronto.
He and his wife live in Clyde Hill, Washington,
with their three sons. Outside of work at Microsoft,
John serves on the technology committee of his
children's school, collects wine, reads books
ranging from history to linguistics to science
fiction, and enjoys participating in triathlons,
long-distance cycling, and skiing.
