Turning Adversity into Opportunity - A Recap of 2009 and the 2010 Outlook:
CIO Technology Priorities in the ‘New’ Economy

For many CIOs, to say that 2009 thus far has presented its fair share of challenges is clearly an understatement. On the one hand, budget constraints have forced IT departments into a 'leverage and optimize' mode as part of broader cost reduction mandates, while on the other the business requirements have become significantly more demanding due to volatility in the markets. Organizations have been forced to rethink investment strategies – and any new capital expenditure is coming under intense scrutiny. As a result, new pricing and service delivery models have becoming more attractive where more flexibility is available.

As we move into the second half of the year and early effects of the government stimulus packages become noticeable, fortunately the question seems not so much to be about 'how much worse will it get?', but more of a case of 'what will the recovery look like?' This presents us with an opportunity to think about what the 'post-crisis' technology landscape look like, and in this respect CIO's are asking a number of questions as they start making plans for 2010:
  • How do we ensure that the cost reductions made in 2009 are sustainable on the infrastructure front? What is our data center strategy? And how do we continue to leverage the benefits of virtualization without negatively impacting other aspects of the IT architecture?
  • How do we organizations continue investigating ways of getting access to IT resources with minimal upfront capital investment - and more importantly how to scale capacity up and down based on business requirements in a dynamic fashion. And if this means leveraging 'Cloud Services' - how will this fit with the current 'on-premise' roadmap?
  • Where does Green IT fit in the equation? How will the regulatory landscape change as a result of the meetings in Copenhagen at the end of the year?
  • And most importantly, how does IT continue to remain relevant to the business in the longer term, particularly in terms of treating information as a strategic asset?
This session will attempt to answer these questions, as well as provide a healthy platform for debate to ensure that attendees can share best practices where relevant. IDC will also be sharing some case studies based on the CIO innovation awards that have recently been documented across the Asia/Pacific region.
