Unified Communications is redefining the manner in which devices and applications are being used for communication. It is gradually bringing applications, devices, telephony and presence into its fold to create a cohesive business communication experience. In doing so, it is helping enterprises realize their vision of a new work environment that is more conducive for a distributed workforce. As "screenagers" swarm into the workplace, enterprises need to introduce communication modes that bridge the telephony and internet age. In this presentation, IDC provides a fresh perspective on the emerging virtual work environments which are driving collaboration and productivity. It discusses how unified communication powers these work environments. IDC provides insights on early trends on unified communications adoption in Asia/Pacific as vendors steer customers on the path of unifying communication.

1:50 - 2:30 pm The Push To All-IP, NGN Infrastructure And The New Opportunities For Services In APEJ
  Bill Rojas Bill Rojas

As the growth and profit in traditional voice and data services continue to be squeezed, carriers are looking to IP-based consumer and enterprise services as the new engines of growth. Enterprises continue to experience challenges from consolidation and restructuring, compliance and increasing demands to better serve their customers.  IP-based corporate data services are better suited to provide point-to-point and any-to-any connectivity services with improved cost performance to better suit the changing needs of enterprises. Enterprises are also realizing that they need to extend their internal IT services for their staff and customers to include mobile access which is providing further incentive for enterprises to move their platforms to IP-based infrastructure.  On the consumer side, mobile and fixed carriers as well as integrated operators are already seeing the benefits of moving their infrastructure including IT systems to support all-IP services.  In this presentation we provide an overview of what carriers are doing to prepare themselves for an all-IP world.

The Internet took "real" world experiences and gave them new life in the virtual realm. Location-based services now have the opportunity to turn it a full circle, melding the Web back into physical space. The PC was at the heart of the Internet revolution, but mobile phones will dominate location-based services in the coming years. In this presentation, Aloysius Choong will discuss how mobility and location will combine to create stories around consumers, giving rise to a new breed of context-aware devices and applications.
