Singapore and Hong Kong, April 07, 2008Recurring news of further deterioration to the outlook of the US economy has raised concern over the potential impact on the stability of the IT Market in the Asia/Pacific including Japan (APJ) region. In a review of the most recent economic indicators, current IT forecasts, and the economic linkage of APJ and US economies, IDC has developed two scenarios of worsening US economic outlook for lead factors associated with IT expenditure. In the first scenario, IDC’s research depicts a moderate 1.7% and 0.9% erosion of its current forecasted APJ IT market growth for 2008 and 2009, respectfully, should the US conditions worsen. In dollar terms, this means US$4.8B and US$7.5B less market potential in 2008 and 2009.

"Software as a service (SaaS) will offer enterprises, especially the small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), an alternative and affordable model in acquiring software, allowing more companies to embrace IT to improve their business efficiency," says Sheila Lam, senior market research analyst, Asia/Pacific Enterprise Applications Research, IDC Hong Kong. "Meanwhile, enterprises are cautious with the concern of security and data integration if they move onto this delivery model."

Results from this study reveal that in 2007, the enterprise application market in APEJ was valued at US$6.4 billion. The market size is expected to grow by 11.1% to reach US$7.1 billion by 2008. With a positive economic growth in the Asia/Pacific countries in the next five years, the application market is expected to reach US$11.2 billion in 2012 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.6%.
